Regulations for Monuments

The following regulations apply to all monuments erected in the Bunurong Memorial Park cemetery as from 1st December 1997. This document is published for use by holders of "Right of Interment" for monumental graves. Stonemasons are requested to refer to the full list of regulations available from the cemetery office.

All monumental work above ground level shall be of natural long lasting and durable granite (marble is prohibited) as approved by the Trustees. Plans and specifications must be submitted on the appropriate "Application for Monumental Permit" form to the authorized cemetery representative and be approved in writing before work is done. The Trustees shall be at liberty to reject any such plan or specification.

Monumental Areas

Unless otherwise stated, plots for "Right of Interment" are 2.75 metres length by 1.2 metres width for monumental graves and 2.7 by 1.25 for in-ground concrete vaults.

Dimensions do vary and site checks must be made in all cases. Monuments in these areas can be -

  1. FULL MONUMENTAL GRAVE - A full grave monument is only permitted in areas designated for that purpose. A height limit of 2.1 metres without accessories is permitted with a further 400mm allowed for accessories such as angels, crosses etc. A small chapel maximum depth of 450mm may be placed at the head of the monumental grave but must remain no higher than 2.1 meters at the top of the chapel. Dimensions of the ashlar, ledger and kerb set can be obtained from the complete Monumental Regulations document.

  2. HEADSTONE LAWN - A headstone and base is only permitted in the monumental lawn sections. The base must be 1110mm width by 350mm depth and 100mm in height. The maximum overall height of the monument is 1 meter. A bronze plaque fixed to a granite base is also permitted in monumental lawn areas.

Monument Diagram & Dimensions

The diagram shown below sets out dimensions of monuments and is typical of the type of diagram required on the "Application for Monumental Permit" form.

All dimensions are to be shown in metric with front, back and side elevation with total dimensions and number and position of each dowel noted. An isometric drawing is acceptable.

Important: Note that the opening to the grave must have clear access of 2150mm length and 860mm width for lowering the coffin and digging of grave. Minimum ashlar opening must be 2450mm length and 860mm width.

The height and depth of all monuments including vases and attachments must be contained within the dimensions as indicated by this diagram. Note vases and attachments must be set back from front-stone at least 600mm.

Stone Thickness

  1. Stone Work - Minimum thickness is 70mm + or -2mm. For books, tablets, vases, candle boxes and small desks fixed to the kerbs and ledgers, stone thickness must be stated and guaranteed by the mason.

Note: For chapels the apex must be a minimum of 50mm thick.

  2. Ashlars - Minimum width of an ashlar is 125mm with 70mm thickness. Ashlar must be wide enough to have contact with 100% of bottom surface of the kerb. Minimum ashlar opening must be 2450mm length and 860mm width.

To be fixed on foundations a minimum of 24 hours prior to erection of the monument.

  3. Ledgers are to be 50mm wider than the opening between kerbs and a minimum of 70mm thick. Where ledgers are full cover, they will extend a minimum of 25mm over each side of the kerbing to provide suitable grave opening. A traditional monument shall be constructed so as to have a fall of approximately 25mm from back to front.

  4. Minimum thickness of kerbs is 100mm.

  5. Height and thickness of headstones in millimeters -
Minimum Headstone Thickness Height of Free Standing Headstone Height of Partially / Wholly Restrained Headstone
    50 N/A 1 - 1200
    70 0 - 0900 1 - 1200
    100 0900 - 1200 1200 - 1500
    125 1200 - 1500 1500 - 1800

Dowels - Thickness of Stone Diameter of Dowels

  • 100mm and greater 13mm (1/2")
  • 70mm - 100mm 10mm (3/8")

All dowels are to be stainless steel grade 304 or fibreglass. Stainless steel threaded rod is acceptable. Each dowel must be knurled or threaded to provide a key for joining compound.

For kerbs up to 600 high, one dowel only is required to join each kerb stone.

Note: Stainless steel 304 is non magnetic.

Opening Between Kerbs

The minimum grave opening is to be 860mm x 2.150mm to allow clear access for grave to be dug and coffins to be lowered.

Foundations

  • 2 bar F8 TM in the beams
  • Y12 or equivalent deformed bar in the pier
